Hello Aaron,

        The z' dimension is the thickness of the whole detector,
that is, all the material which a particle headed towards the
outer detectors will pass through. This is related to the energy
loss and multiple scattering of the particle.

        The 'suf-thickness' is the active layer on top of the
substrate. z' is substrate + surface. The energy deposited
in the surface is proportional to the ADC signal which is
read out.
