run 9296 in michael's listing is a file that has no charge but root
doesn't complain about. it should not be included in the dilution
determination. when you remove run 9296, you get the following:

    left right
  -------------- --------------
  0.475 +- 0.059 0.565 +- 0.056

which is even closer to what we've been seeing for the past month.

here, though, is an example where one such bad file fairly radically
changed the results of about 20 good ones.
