BATES PROPOSAL Measuring the Delta N N Component of He-3 with BLAST Submitted by Timothy Paul Smith (spokesman) Dartmouth College and the BLAST Collaboration (I hope ?) ABSTRACT We propose the measurement of the (Delta N N) component of He-3 with the BLAST detector. This is the equivalent of observing pre-existing Deltas. We will show in this proposal that BLAST is able to do this with three independent methods simaltatously, in the same apparatus and experiement setup: 1) by looking from the Delta++ signature in the 3He(e,e' p pi+); 2) by performing a Rosenbluth longitudinal/transverse separation of the cross section; and 3) by measuring the ratio of the pion asymmetries. The last two methods are sensitive to the fact that photo-production of a Delta can only contribute to the transverse term of the cross section whereas pre-existing $\Delta$s can contribute to both the longitudinal and transverse terms of the cross section. We will also discuss how this experiment can be performed in conjunction with the spin-dependent quasielastic measurement (Bate Proposal \#89-12).
