Second Workshop on Electronuclear Physics with Internal Targets and the Bates Large Acceptance
Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST)
![[WorkShopPoster1.gif]](WorkShopPoster1.gif)
Construction of the BLAST spectrometer is well underway with the coils and supports
scheduled for delivery at Bates by early 1999. Mechanical design of the detectors and targets is
proceeding and prototype work has commenced. The initial BLAST physics program of spin
dependent electroproduction on few body systems has driven the design of the spectrometer.
The upcoming May Workshop is a timely opportunity to revisit the physics possibilities with the
innovative configuration of CW polarized beam, polarized internal targets and a large acceptance
spectrometer. New ideas for experiments using the BLAST spectrometer are particularly
welcome. All contributions to the Workshop will be included in the Proceedings.
The Workshop format will follow that of the previous meeting at Tempe in 1992. Plenary
talks will take place each morning and the afternoon will be devoted to working group sessions.
In an effort to maximize involvement of all participants, in so far as possible working groups will
be held in series. Confirmed plenary speakers for the Workshop include:
- R. Alarcon (Arizona State University)
- J. van den Brand (Free University, Amsterdam/NIKHEF)
- W. Glöckle (Ruhr University, Bochum)
- F. Gross (College of William and Mary)
- C. W. de Jager (Jefferson Laboratory)
- T.-S. H. Lee (Argonne National Laboratory)
- A. Sarty (Florida State University)
- T. Walcher (Mainz)
- R. Wiringa (Argonne National Laboratory)
As of this time working groups have been organized on the following topics:
- The Nucleon: convener H. Gao (MIT), haiyan@mitlns.mit.edu
- Pion Electroproduction: convener J. Matthews (MIT), matthews@mitlns.mit.edu
- Physics with A >= 4 Targets: convener W. Hersman (UNH), hersman@einstein.sr.unh.edu
Interested contributors should contact the conveners directly. Additional working groups can
be organized by contacting either of the Workshop co-chairs. We anticipate a second mailing in
the Spring to those who have expressed interest in attending the Workshop. All information on
the Workshop, including registration, is available on the World Wide Web at
http://blast.mit.mit.edu/workshop
For those who wish to economize we have made dormitory housing available at Boston
University (reservations must be made through Sheila Dodson, see BU Housing Form). For
those who prefer hotel accommodations, we have been able to arrange rooms at the Double Tree
Hotel (please make your own hotel reservations). We have also included a list of other
recommended hotels in the area for your convenience. Please read the enclosed information for
more details. Accommodations in the Cambridge area in late May are always very tight. Thus,
we urge all Workshop participants to make reservations as soon as conveniently possible.
We look forward to seeing you at MIT in late May for what promises to be a stimulating and
lively meeting.
Sincerely,
Richard Milner and Ricardo Alarcon
Co-Chairs of the Organizing Committee
