i like to use gROOT->SetStyle("Plain"), which also sets the fill color.
(it still doesn't set the TLegend background. (any suggestions?) if
you are basing your scripts on init.C, there are a couple of new options:
  -plain (see above)
  -notitle (InitCanvas doesn't draw the title pave)
