Hi Eugene,
   Phone me tomorrow, and I'll walk you through it. What you suggest
is perfectly reasonable, and is what CVS is good at. Once you've
checked your changes in on a branch, you can begin a systematic
comparison of revisions, or check in your own changes on top of
Vitaliy's.
