[BLAST_SHIFTS] morning shift, 06/01//03

more data taking this shift with polarized hydrogen. wc boxes L01 and L16
kept tripping constantly. i was forced to disable them, else no data
would have been recorded (since data is now inhibited whenever a box
trips).

the wc signal-to-noise ratio was good all night in all superlayers (at
least 2 to 1), and the ratio was constant, too.

runs 659 - 675 have all been "lrn"ed. however, when i tried to "flrn"
them (as show_ep_asym seems to require), i got path errors. i think they
are easy to fix, but i'm not gonna go moving files in the blast directory.

run 666 was taken during this shift. if you analyze this file backwards,
you can hear satan talking about how blast was his idea.

tong played with trying to change the polarizations in the "ideal"
asymmetry plots so as to match the asymmetries that we are getting. if
you look at the attached "100%pol.ps" file, you'll see what the
asymmetries should look like if the product of the beam and target
asymmetries was 100%. tong basically found that the asymmetries that we
see are consistent with an imaginary polarization. the second included
plot (called "2.25%_pol.ps") is the best he could do, assuming a
polariaztion product of 2.25%. however, if you look at it, you'll see
that the red and the blue asymmetries should be on opposite sides of each
other. to get the theoretical asymmetries as close to the observed ones
as possible, the polarization product must be 0.0%. even then,
the asymmetries will still be on the wrong side of each other. actually,
a negative polarization product might make the asymmetries line up
okay... course, that doesn't make much sense, but i won't tell if you
don't.

oh yeah, occasionally after crunching a file for an hour or so, lrn.C will
suddenly stop, like it does in run 668:

$ root -l lrn.C 668 2>/dev/null
root [0]
Processing lrn.C...
